Shooting with a twin lens reflex camera is more involved than carrying around a compact rangefinder. For instance, you can't easily pick up a TLR and snap a picture out of your car window. The waist level viewfinder kind of requires you to hang the camera around your neck and look down to compose your shot.

But here it is--the Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex 1b.

I really like this camera. It's well made and quirky but still easy to use. Luckily for me, I have the owner's manual so I'm able to get myself out of jam when I forget how to do things like load the film and set the film counter.

One of the quirky features is the left-handed focus adjustment. But it's smooth and easy to dial in your focus. I find myself flipping up the magnifier to fine tune my focus just because I don't always trust my eyes looking down at waist level. The shutter release lever is a barrel-shaped metal piece that flips out to the side before you're able to swing into action. You have to cock the shutter before snapping the picture. This camera has a film advance knob/counter on the right hand side of the camera. After you load the film and wind it to 1, you're supposed to only go by the camera's film counter. On this roll of film, it didn't properly advance a frame so I had double exposure on a couple of my shots.

The other thing of note on my copy of this camera is that the shutter is sticky at slower speeds. I've never tried to remedy this. I typically don't shoot at slower speeds but I did snap a few low light pictures this time around. One time, the sluggish shutter actually improved my exposure and produced a nice shot of the water tower lit up with Christmas lights--with a nice motion blur on a car passing by down below.

Overall, this is a very nice camera by Zeiss Ikon. Aside from the sluggish shutter, this camera is very capable of producing quality results.

The Yashica Electro 35CC. I received this camera in a batch along with the Vivitar 35ES. The shipper included a few canisters of expired film. I decided to use the PathMark 100ISO film for the month of October. I had previously tested this camera out with some black and white film and felt pretty comfortable that it was functioning properly. I had to pop the top off when I first got it to sort out a few things but it seems functional.

This is an aperture priority rangefinder camera. It's very compact and easy to use. The metering happens when you depress the shutter release plunger halfway. It will let you know if you are under or over exposed and you can adjust accordingly. The "clunk" noise as you wind the film is a bit odd. And, actually, I added a felt pad to the plunger so it's more of a thud now.

The 35mm/1.8 lens is capable of handling all sorts of lighting situations. Even when using the 100 speed film in low light it wasn't an issue. Now that I think about it, I may have exposed it at 200 ISO. I'll have to double check that later.

I'm a big fan of aperture priority since the Olympus XA is also aperture priority. I would reach for the Olympus XA over this camera but it's a cool, compact camera.

September's camera was a return to a compact rangefinder. I readily admit that I'm a big fan of compact rangefinders and I have several of them. I've used a few of them for this blog--the Chinon 35EE II, the Olympus XA, and the Ricoh 500G. The Vivitar 35ES is a good-looking camera that fits right in with the rest of the bunch and was easy to use.

This camera has a 40mm/1.7 lens and bright viewfinder patch. The all black finish is appealing and it has just enough heft to feel solid in your hand. The meter is located within the lens housing but I didn't use any filters this month. Just know that you wouldn't have to compensate when using filters if you use this camera.

I decided to go back to shooting black and white film this month. I still have some bulk Kodak Tri-X from the late 70's that keeps impressing me.
When I got this Sears TLS, it had a black Dymo label over the Sears logo that read "Ricoh". I guess the originally owner was embarrassed to carry around a Sears branded camera. Sears camera line was a series of rebranded cameras made by all of the top-of-the-line makers. This one is a rebranded Ricoh Singlex TLS.

I decided to stick with one M42 screw mount lens for this month. I used the Sears len pictured above. It's a 55mm lens that stops down to 1.4. The ASA dial is located on the front face of the camera. It's set by lifting the face and rotating it to the correct setting. The same dial is used to set the shutter speed. The TTL light meter switch is located next to the lens and you push it up to turn it on. Unlike the GAF L-17 I used a few months ago, the meter does not shut off after each use. So I ended up killing the battery pretty quickly since I left it on by accident. I'm a slow and deliberate picture taker so, for me, the auto shutoff of the GAF suits by style more than this design.

As I go through this project, I have started to figure out my true preferences when it comes to cameras. I think SLR cameras are fine but they're not my favorite to lug around. The picture quality and control over focus and aperture are top-notch but I'm less inclined to tote one of these SLR's around.

Another thing I've learned about myself--every time I shoot color film, I wish that I had shot black and white. Then when I shoot black and white I think that I better shoot some color film so I'm not just shooting black and white. It's a conundrum!

Personal preferences aside, the Sears TLS camera is a fine camera that produces excellent results.
The Ricoh 500G is an excellent compact rangefinder. I would put it in the same class as the Olympus XA in terms of being able to produce consistently great quality images with the sharp Rikenon lens (40mm/f2.8). The camera is capable of shooting 25-800 ISO film with shutters speeds of 8/15/30/60/125/250/500 plus Bulb.

Inside the viewfinder, the rangefinder patch is about adequate and the aperture scale is situated vertically on the right side in the viewer. You can run this camera manually or in auto mode. In auto mode, the camera operates as a shutter priority camera. I've found that the camera does a great job of determining correct exposure (even with a modern battery) so I ran it in auto mode for most of my pictures this month. The light meter eye is located in the lens ring so you can use filters without having to compensate for them.

I found this camera on eBay and got it for $20. It was local so I didn't have to pay for shipping.

As I go through this blog project, I've been taking mental notes on which ones I can't wait to focus on when I get back to using any camera I choose. The Ricoh 500G will definitely be one I reach for when I want a compact camera that's capable of capturing impressive images.

The Petri 1948 Folding Camera is the quirkiest camera I've used for this blog. It has a pop-up viewfinder, an uncoupled rangefinder (I think maybe it works but I didn't use it), a hard-to-get-to aperture adjustment, a waist-level viewfinder, and a left-handed shutter release button. In spite of all of that, I really want to like this camera. But I just don't. On top of that, the focus doesn't seem to be working so it's easy to not love it at all.

I do like that the eveready case looks like a well-loved catcher's mitt.

I guess I don't really have a lot to say about this camera. And since I have two other folders that outperform this camera--those being the Ansco Titan and the Franka Solida III--I'm inclined to set this one free.

I wish I had more pics to share but most were unusable.
Here's an example of the focus not doing anything. I had this focused on the lawn flamingo at 3'.

Before I stumbled upon this camera at Goodwill two and a half years ago, I had never heard of it. It wasn't on my radar so I had to do a quick Google search to learn more about it. It is a very compact rangefinder with a clever clam shell cover system. This is one of the few cameras that will fit in your pocket with no issues. For $3.99 (with the attached A11 flash) I couldn't pass it up.

This camera is an aperture priority camera which is a rarity. You select the aperture and the camera will determine the correct shutter speed. There's a shutter speed display in the viewfinder but I didn't know that until recently. (Besides, I'm not sure the reading is accurate in the viewfinder.) The shutter speeds run from 1/500 to about 10 seconds in low light. This is truly an amazing camera that is capable of handling just about any situation you can throw at it.

As with a lot of old cameras, the rangefinder patch is pretty faint on my example. But it's still usable without being frustrating. The focus lever has a very short throw so it's quick and easy to get your focus dialed in.

I have used this camera quite a bit over the past few years because of its size, convenience, and performance. If you have the opportunity to pick one up, you definitely should.

The Konica Autorex is an interesting SLR camera that shoots both full and half frame picutres. I bought two of these--each one had various issues. I sent this one off to be repaired along with a couple of lenses I picked up. The repairs fixed the film advance issue, the light meter connectivity, and the repair guy added in the resistor so I can use modern batteries for the metering.

The Autorex is a well-built SLR and I really like the half or full frame option. There's also a nifty "aperture preview" button near the bottom of the lens. One of the drawbacks of this camera is that the light meter is housed inside the shutter speed dial on the front of the camera so there is no TTL (through the lens) metering. This will only really be an issue if you're using filters.

There are instructions printed on the bottom of the ever ready case for switching between half and full frame. For full to half frame, wind the film them flip the lever. For half to full frame, flip the lever then wind the film. It's nice to have the instructions on the camera so you don't have to remember that.

I used several lenses this month. Unfortunately, I didn't write down which lens I used for which pictures. I used a Konica Hexanon 52mm/1.8, a Konica Hexanon AR 40mm/1.8, a Rexagon Auto MC 28mm/2.8, and a Super Takumar 135mm/3.5 (M42 mount used with a lens adapter).

As you can see, the expired film I used (Fujicolor 200 Super HGII) suffered from color shift. In spite of that, some of the shots turned out okay.

The Konica Auto S was the second camera I bought when getting back into film photography. I settled on this camera because of the examples I found online. The lens is very impressive. I do have to say that the camera and this film roll fought me from start to finish so this month's examples aren't the best but that's the name of the game with old cameras.

The top shutter speed on this camera is 1/500. The Hexanon lens is very capable with a max aperture of 1.8. The battery is only required to operate the meter and auto mode. It can be used as a fully manual camera if desired. I decided to let the camera make the decisions this month--so I used the camera in shutter priority mode.

Overall, I really like this camera when it's working properly. It's easy to focus and the aperture selection is clearly visible in the viewfinder.

The GAF L-17 is an SLR camera made in Japan by Chinon. This is the first SLR used for this blog!

I picked this camera up for $7 on eBay (without a lens). It's an M42 screw mount so lenses are aplenty. I paid twice as much for the Chinon lens after winning the camera. I bought the 55mm/f1.7 lens because that's what's mounted on the camera in the original manual. I also have a 28mm/f2.8 lens. I like that focal length but it's hard for me to judge the focus on that lens. It's just not as obvious as the focus on the 55mm. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that I wear glasses. I swapped lenses back and forth throughout the month just for fun.

It wasn't until the end of the month that I went back and read the manual for this camera. There were a couple of features that I wasn't too sure about so I wanted to read up on them. One feature is a slide/switch near the winding lever. This switch disengages the film transport and allows you to use the winder to cock the shutter without advancing the film so you can do a double exposure. There's another button on the other side of the top deck but I figured that one out pretty easily--it's a battery check button. Push it down and look for the green light in the viewfinder.

One thing I read in the manual that I didn't realize is that you can run this camera in manual or auto mode. I used it in manual mode all month but it's nice to know that auto mode is there if you want it. In auto mode, the camera works as a shutter priority camera. The top shutter speed on this camera is 1/1000 of a second.

The light meter is switched on by pressing down on the switch next to the lens. It falls under your right index finger when holding the camera. What I like about this camera is that it disengages the light meter after each picture taken. This is a nice feature that definitely extends the life of the battery as the circuit is disengaged after each shutter release.

As you can see in the picture, my example is missing its self-timer arm. I rarely use the self-timer so this isn't a big deal but maybe I'll hunt one down just to make the camera look nice.

I've been interested in the Fujica 35 EE rangefinder for awhile. I was impressed with the quality of the pictures I was seeing online and intrigued by the funky quirks of the camera. But I was never tempted enough to drop the $40 or $50 they are usually listed for on eBay. So I admired them from afar but wasn't tripping over myself to get one.

Then something that never happens to me happened. I was at an antique store one weekend and they had a stash of old cameras. The Fujica caught my eye and I thought "surely that isn't a Fujica 35 EE"--but it was! The camera looked pretty clean but shutter was sticky. But for $12.50 I was willing to give it a shot.

This camera is super easy to work on. I believe there were only a couple of things to remove to get to the shutter. I used a generous amount of naphtha to get it moving. After letting it dry out, I applied graphite to the shutter blades and worked the shutter for a bit. Once I was satisfied that they were up and running, I blew out the excess with a can of compressed air and reassembled the lens.

I've picked this camera up from time to time since I got it to make sure everything was moving as it was supposed to. The shutter showed no signs of sluggishness so I feel good about using this camera.

The camera came in its original, tattered case. I'm always encouraged when I see this because it means that the selenium meter may have been protected over the years and might still work. The needle didn't even hesitate when exposed to light. It started jumping around ready for action. I compared it to the light meter app on my phone and it seems pretty darn accurate.

Let's talk about the weight of this camera for a minute. Yes, it has quite a bit of heft to it. You could definitely clobber a guy with it if you felt threatened. But there's something reassuring about a nice, solid camera in your hand(s) so don't let the idea of a 2 lbs. camera deter you from picking one up. Unless you're weak. Then maybe you should steer clear of this one and buy a plastic point and shoot.

I like the thumb wheel for adjusting the focus. You can hold the camera steady with two hands while you set your focus. As some users have pointed out, the adjustment moves the bigger image to align with the smaller patch. I didn't really notice it until I read that online. The small patch is stagnant and the full frame moves when focusing. Quirky--but it didn't bother me at all.

The highest ISO supported by this camera is 200. The camera has a full compliment of shutter speeds plus bulb setting with a top speed of 1/1000 of a second! So you're able to use a wider aperture during bright light situations if that's what you're going for.

The camera can be operated in auto mode or full manual. The light meter read out is located on top of the camera. The viewfinder only shows the framing lines, rangefinder patch, and has a dot that will turn red if the exposure isn't correct given the conditions you're shooting under. When you select the auto mode, the shutter release button pops up to let you know you're in auto mode. I don't care for the extra long travel of the shutter release button in auto mode but it was only mildly annoying.

There's a release lever on the front of the camera that must be slid to the side when you want to access slower shutter speeds.

Overall, I think this is a great camera that should serve you well.

The Franka Solida III is a medium format (120 film) camera with an uncoupled rangefinder. It has an excellent f2.9/80mm lens. The example that I own is in pretty good shape. The rangefinder needs to be calibrated but I haven't had the time or inclination to figure out how to adjust it. I do better estimating the distance on my own. The one time I relied on the rangefinder, my pictures were out of focus.

The bellows are in excellent order with no light leaks to speak of. The lens can be fussy from time to time when attempting to close the lens door. The hand strap was dry rotted when I got the camera and it quickly broke within minutes of using it for its intended purpose. I was able to fashion a new handle with some leather and rivets I had. I was back in business in short order.

This camera is equipped with double exposure protection. There's a window on top of the camera with a white/red dot system. When the dot is white it means you've fired the shutter and need to advance the film. The dot will turn red and you're good to cock the shutter and take your next picture.

The Franka Solida III is an excellent camera from Germany. It's relatively easy to use and produces good results on a consistent basis.

I used Kodak Tri-X 400 film this month. Developed using R5 Monobath Developer and scanned on an Epson V550.

This Chinon 35 EE-II is the first camera that I had not used prior to this project. Sometimes you just have to trust that a camera still has the ability to capture a moment.

I picked it up on eBay because it looked to be in good shape. It turns out the battery wire was fried from battery leak. It was real tricky getting in there to solder the wire. My first attempt to fix this was not successful. After taking a step back, I revisited the repair and was able to get it fixed the second time around.

The battery situation took some thinking to figure out. It was originally powered by two of the thicker batteries. I stacked two modern batteries on one side and used a brass nut to bridge the other side of the connection. This seems to work just fine and everything worked okay after I did this.

This is an aperture priority rangefinder fitted with a 38mm/f2.7 lens. You select the aperture and the camera will select the shutter speed. The shutter speed is not represented anywhere on the camera or in the viewfinder. There are over/under lights (green/red/green) directly to the right of the viewfinder that you can see as you depress the shutter release. It's good to know that the max shutter time is around 10 seconds. You will get the under exposure warning any time the camera will require a long shutter speed to get the correct exposure. Don't be afraid to use a tripod to get the shot you're looking for.

The camera has a shutter release lock that could be handy. Personally, I don't advance the film and cock the shutter until I'm ready to take the picture. That's a habit I've developed since I have so many cameras that tension the shutter when you advance the film.

As pointed out on other sites, there isn't an owner's manual readily available on the internet.

The exposures were pretty good on most of the pictures but the camera didn't produce consistent results. Although this camera is compact and easy to use, it doesn't hold a candle to the Olympus XA.

I used Kodak Tri-X 400 and Orwo UN54 (100 iso) film this month. Developed using the R5 Monobath Developer. Scanned with an Epson V550.

The pictures are composed in the portrait format. Rotate the camera 90 degrees and you're taking pics in landscape format! It's equipped with a 30mm/f1.7 lens. According to the literature it's made up of 6 elements in 4 components.

The ISO range for this camera is 25-400. The shutter speeds go from 1/8 to 1/500 plus a Bulb setting. The size of the camera is slightly larger than pocket size. It fits comfortably in the hand and mine came with a Canon wrist strap that screws into the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera.

The flash shoe was dangling when I got this one. It ended up falling off and I haven't bothered to remove the top and reattach it yet. For flash photography, I hand held the flash. The camera's small and light enough that you can do that without much fuss.

The shutter was gummed up so I had to go in and give it the ol' naphtha treatment. That was several months ago. So when I snapped my first couple of shots this month, I noticed that it was way too sluggish and wouldn't make it through the month without another round of naphtha and I also used some graphite on the blades this time. It seems to be hanging in there but I wouldn't be surprised if I have to go into the lens element again in the future.

This camera does a great job in the auto mode. Just don't forget that you still have to do the focusing. The focusing on this camera is zone focus and there are icons in the viewfinder (Portrait/Group/Scenery) to let you know the approximation of that focus.

The CdS light meter is located above the lens barrel. The lens cap will not block out the meter. So I put the camera in an old Kodak zipper case to keep the light out and save the battery.

I decided to shoot some Kodak Gold 200 film just because I've shot a lot of black and white the past few months. I also shot color film with this camera when I first got it. I think I'll load it with some black and white film the next time I use it.

Please note: My developer was exhausted! I knew I was pushing my luck using old chemicals. But hopefully you can still see that the camera is very capable with an excellent lens. And the auto exposure mode seems to get it right a majority of the time.
September's camera was the Ansco Titan 20. While last month's camera, the Ansco Color Clipper, was just a step above a point-and-shoot, the Titan 20 is the polar opposite. The user is in charge of everything--focus, shutter speed, aperture and the cocking of the shutter. There is NO double exposure protection on this camera. If you're in the habit of not winding to the next frame until you're ready to snap a pic, this camera will be a challenge for you. There are a lot of cameras that cock the shutter when you wind to the next frame. Because of this, I wait until I'm ready to take a picture to wind the camera in order to keep tension off the shutter until necessary. So I had to get used to winding immediately after taking a picture so I wouldn't end up with a double exposure.

The Titan takes 120 spool film. There's nothing too tricky about loading this camera and winding on until you get to the number 1 on the film paper backing. I find the viewfinder a bit tiny and not very representative of what will actually end up in your picture. When I first took pictures with this camera, I ended up with way more foreground than I thought I would. There doesn't seem to be any magnification in the viewfinder so it's almost a 1:1 ratio when looking through there. I do wear glasses so I'm sure that doesn't help the situation because I can only get my eye so close to the viewfinder window.

The focus ring has a nice post on it to help turn it to the correct guessed distance. There is no rangefinder so you need to be good at zone focus or distance guessing. There's a handy depth-of-field guide that is color coded on this camera. The colors correspond to the color of the arrows below the lens aperture numbers.

The shutter speeds range 1/2 a second up to 1/400th of a second plus "B" (Bulb) and "T" (Time). This is the first camera I've owned that had a T option. In this setting, you trip the shutter and the shutter remains open until you trip it again. I haven't tried this mode yet but I'm sure it would be great for night photography. The shutter cocking mechanism is located on the top of the lens and is quick to use with a short throw.

This camera has a very cool minimalist design when closed. There are only two knobs and two buttons (one to open the camera and the other is the shutter button) on the top. The appearance is very art deco and the machined metal top is very attractive.

The camera is equipped with a 90mm/f4.5 lens.

I only had to make one minor adjustment when I got this camera. The arm that trips the shutter would not travel far enough a second time when set to the "T" mode. All I had to do was bend the arm ever so slightly and now it works like a charm. All shutter speeds work properly and the camera has no other issues.

I used the LightMeter app on my phone to determine the correct exposure of these pictures.

This month's camera is the Ansco Color Clipper. This example was in excellent condition. It came with the original box that included the case, strap, and flash unit. I love the look of this medium format (120 film) camera. The metal body is painted moss green with a wrinkled paint finish. The lens portion of the camera collapses back into the camera when not in use. The shutter release bar is anodized red. The lens can be adjusted for zone focusing. On my example, turning the focus ring doesn't feel like it's doing anything. There's not a lot of resistance but the photos I've taken have proven to me that it is actually focusing (or not focusing as the case may be!). The only other control is the color or b&w selection below the lens.

The camera is very basic. You load the film, set the camera for either color or black & white film, extend the lens (by pulling out on the side indentations), compose your shot, focus, and depress the shutter bar. The bar remains collapsed until you wind to the next frame. It's designed to do this as a way to prevent double exposure. I like this feature. If you are into double exposure photography, you can easily lift the shutter bar back up and this will allow you to take a second exposure on the same frame.

I've had this camera for awhile. I think it's fun and easy to use. I can tell you that the flash is pretty harsh and lead me to create the hashtag #flashbulbsendfriendships. It's blinding. I stocked up on plenty of old flashbulbs so I can offend people for quite some time. Just be aware that using this camera with the flash instantly turns you into that crazy person with an old timey camera. (Note: I didn't end up using the flash unit for any of this month's pictures. But I carried the flash unit around with me just in case.)

Despite its lack of controls, I really like the simplicity of this medium format camera. The fact that you only need to remember to set your focus means that you can quickly compose and snap your photo. Although I'll admit that I'm pretty deliberate when I'm taking pictures so I'm just as comfortable with a "complicated" camera.

I shot these pics on expired Kodak VR-G 100 film from 1988. Processed at home using the Unicolor C-41 Kit. Scanned on an Epson V550 scanner.
This is the first camera I bought when getting back into analog photography. I liked the design, it looked clean, and it came with its original case so I snagged it off of Etsy. It's completely manual (no rangefinder, no light meter, no auto mode) so you have to figure out the correct settings--aperture, shutter speed, and distance from your subject. It's actually not as difficult as it sounds. Although I did underexpose quite a bit early on because I kept thinking "it sure is sunny and bright out here" so I would set the shutter speed to 300 out of fear.

There are other Solinettes on the internet but they are all folding cameras. I'm not 100% sure where this fits into the scheme of Agfa cameras but I believe it to be from the 1950's. (Update 9/19/17--recent research has revealed that this camera is from 1954.) This camera most resembles the Agfa Silette but has a Prontor-SVS shutter instead of a Vario. The Solinette also has a full compliment of shutter speeds (topping out at 300) whereas the Silette is restricted to four--B, 25, 50 and 200.

I had to make a couple of leather straps for the case when the original ones broke. I was carrying it around for awhile after the strap broke but got tired of doing that so I made my own straps. The camera itself doesn't have any strap lugs but the case isn't too cumbersome so it's not a problem to keep it in the case and remove the top when you're ready to shoot.

All pics were shot on Kodak T-Max 100 film. Developed in R5 Monobath. Scanned using an Epson V550 Scanner.

For the month of June, I carried around my 1966 Agfa Isoflash Rapid C. I found this camera at Goodwill for $2.99 and it came with a case AND two rapid cartridges. In the store, I didn't think the camera worked because I couldn't get the shutter to fire. But I read that you need to have film loaded in the camera for it to engage the shutter mechanism and that proved to be true. The camera came with its original battery but I replaced it with four small batteries (taped together with electrical tape) to fire the flash cube.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This camera is what is referred to as a simple camera. The only really adjustment available to the user is a sliding switch to select whether it's "sunny" or "cloudy". Outside of that, you frame up your subject and snap away!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can load regular 35mm film into the rapid cartridges. In a dark room, I reel off two feet of film and gently feed it into the canister. This will give you the right amount to shoot 16 square pictures. That's right--the pictures are square.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For a good tutorial on loading rapid cartridges, I recommend THIS page over at Lomography's website.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This camera is small and inconspicuous which makes it easy to carry around and use without much fuss. I shot 16 pics in color (on expired Kodak Color 400 bulk film) and 16 pics in black and white (on expired Kodak Tri-X bulk film from the late 70's).
